MIAMI (AP)—Dwyane Wade’s 3-pointer at the end of the first half was desperation.

The one in the final seconds of regulation, dramatic.

And the one that finally ended the game, unbelievable.

Miami’s MVP candidate stole the ball from John Salmons with 3 seconds left, then made a running 3-pointer as time expired to lift the Heat to a wild 130-127 double-overtime win over the Chicago Bulls on Monday night.

“Mr. Dwyane Tyrone Wade Jr., if he’s not legitimately considered for an MVP candidate, I don’t know what he needs to do,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. “We are currently a playoff contender and night after night, he’s making incredible plays like this.”

Wade—who finished with 48 points and 12 assists in nearly 50 minutes, shooting 15-for-21 from the field—made a 3-pointer at the end of the first half, then another with 11.5 seconds left in regulation.

And after missing a layup at the end of the first extra session, he more than atoned for that at the end.

“You never know until it goes in,” Wade said. “But I was 99.9 percent sure that one was cash.”

Referees reviewed the play for more than two minutes, before Mark Wunderlich shot his hands in the air, officially giving Miami the win.

“Credit the Bulls,” said Wade, who got a congratulatory text from Cleveland star and fellow MVP hopeful LeBron James after the game. “This is one of those games for the ages.”

Michael Beasley had 18 points, Mario Chalmers added 17 and Jamario Moon scored 13 for the Heat, who stayed within 1 1/2 games of Atlanta for the No. 4 spot in the Eastern Conference playoff chase.

Ben Gordon scored a season-high 43 points for the Bulls, including eight 3-pointers. Salmons scored 29 and Derrick Rose added 23 for the Bulls, who are 0-3 against Miami this season and used only seven players Monday.

Rose played 55 minutes. Salmons played nearly 54. Gordon nearly played 50. And Chicago was right there, before Wade’s dramatics ended a 3-hour, 17-minute epic.

“Basically, that’s how the game was going to end—who had the ball last,” Gordon said. “Whoever made the last best play was going to win the game and D-Wade made a spectacular play. He willed his team to win.”

Wade had some help, too.

Midway through the second overtime, Beasley found Udonis Haslem for an easy two-hand slam to break a tie, then caught an alley-oop pass from Wade for a dunk and three-point play on the next possession by Miami, putting the Heat up 124-119 with 2:19 left.

Beasley hung on the rim for a second, letting out a scream of delight.

Wade walked slowly to the other end, bent over and gasped for air.

He certainly had a wild night. Wade made a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from near midcourt at the end half, sent it to overtime with another 3, then missed a reverse layup with less than 1 second left in the first overtime.

“He comes in every day and says ‘I’m tired, I don’t feel like doing it right now,”’ Beasley said. “If 40 points, 46, 47 points is tired, I’d like to see him fully energized.”

They needed every bit of Wade’s energy at the end.

The game was tied three times in the second overtime, the last coming when Salmons answered a basket by Wade with one of his own with 37.9 seconds left.

Chicago went to Salmons again on its final possession, and the former University of Miami standout drove into the lane against Haslem. Wade came from the back side, tapped the ball free, then swished the runner at the buzzer.

He ran to midcourt, jumped on the table where Heat owner Micky Arison was sitting, and shot both arms in the air.

“I made a move and he came out of nowhere,” Salmons said. “He read it well and still made the shot, made a great play.”

Dribbling downcourt, Wade said he was thinking about something Spoelstra said in the game’s final stoppage, telling players they had one more timeout left.

“I was about to call it,” Wade said. “And then I said, ‘Nah.”’

Miami led 84-74 entering the fourth, after Wade scored 27 points in the middle two quarters to recharge the Heat.

Miami trailed 11-1 in the early minutes and was down by 13 later in the half, but went into intermission with a 54-52 lead—thanks to Wade hitting a 31-footer with less than 1 second left before the break.

Wade had 15 points in the third quarter, the Heat led 84-70 late in the period and settled for the 10-point edge entering the fourth. But Gordon—a career 21-point-per-game scorer against Miami—single-handedly got the Bulls back on top.

He scored 14 straight Chicago points in the final minutes of regulation, including hitting 3-pointers on four of five possessions in one stretch. Gordon then made one of two free throws with 20.7 seconds left, putting Chicago up 104-101.

That left Wade plenty of time. The reigning Eastern Conference player of the week almost made it look easy, making a 3-pointer over Salmons for the final basket of regulation.

It was the 78th straight game where Wade scored in double figures, matching his franchise record. He’s also scored at least 20 points in 19 straight games, putting him one away from matching the Heat record in that department—which he also owns.

But that seemed irrelevant in the end.

“Right now, man,” Moon said in the locker room, pointing to Wade’s stall, “there ain’t nobody in the league playing better than him.”

It was Latin Night—“Noche Latina,” part of the NBA’s annual tribute to fans and players from Latin America and Hispanic cities—Miami wore black uniforms with “El Heat” across the chest. This latest confrontation between Cleveland and Miami provided an opportunity to compare the performances of two of the game's elite players — LeBron James and Dwyane Wade.

OFFENSE

Both players totally dominated the ball when their respective teams had possession. Oddly enough, each had 76 touches overall.

On mid-range jumpers, James was 2-of-2, while Wade was 3-of-6. On long-range jumpers, James hit 5-of-11, and Wade managed only 2-of-6 (including an air-ball). Although neither has a shooter's stroke, LBJ's release is somewhat smoother and even his misses were softer. Advantage: James.

LeBron's mediocre showing from the stripe has been a problem throughout his career. The only explanations are a failure of concentration, shooting too quickly, as well as his own lack of confidence. Advantage: Wade.

Both are virtually unstoppable in a broken field. Wade has a long and quick last step and incredible creativity when he approaches the basket. LBJ isn't quite as quick, but is equally as creative and has a more efficient cross-over (both ways). LeBron's edge is his power — defenders simply bounce off of him when he attacks the hole. Advantage: James.

There isn't much to choose between the passing abilities of these two guys. However, since Cleveland responds to LeBron's penetrations by spreading their shooters, James has an easier time delivering the ball to open teammates. Wade has the slightest edge in passing to rolling bigs.

But LBJ's size is the deciding factor here. Double-teams don't bother him as much as they do Wade. Plus, he can pass the ball with his left hand better than Wade can. Advantage: James.

They're both top-notch ball-handlers, but James has a better grip on the rock when he's swarmed in the lane. Advantage: James.

For the most part, both start offensive sets in one corner or the other, then use a screen to come to the top and receive the ball. In the clutch, however, they simply carry the ball across the time-line. Even so, Wade is much more active without the ball — cutting, curling, and setting screens. Advantage: Wade.

Neither player has a discernible edge in the following offensive categories: Court awareness, willingness to sacrifice, quick shot-release, and ability to penetrate.

DEFENSE

For most of the game, LeBron was matched up with Shawn Marion, who didn't offer much resistance (except when James tried to post him) on either end. Indeed, the Matrix tallied a mere four points, and for most of the game looked like he was playing in a pickup game with four strangers.

As the game raced to the wire, however, James switched over to Wade with mixed results:

Wade shot over him and bagged a 20-footer.

Wade beat James off the dribble twice, but quick-footed baseline rotations caused him to lose the ball on both occasions.

When LBJ went under a handoff, Wade pulled right and buried another 20-footer.

James reached for Wade's dribble and came up empty, allowing Wade to get to the hoop where he was fouled by Zydrunas Ilguaskas.

Wade made several passes that gained no advantage for the Heat.

James' defense on Wade was abetted by double-teams. Wade responded by tossing a neat pass to Udonis Haslem who was open underneath the basket but bobbled the ball out-of-bounds. Another pass by Wade found Marcus Banks unguarded on the right wing, but Banks missed the shot.

On the other hand, Wade played Delonte West nose-to-nose for most of the game — and, unlike Marion, West was aggressive on offense. Wade was lifted in the third-quarter by a West head-fake 25-feet from the hoop, and also overplayed West's left-hand too much in the last minute of play -- and was burned when West drove right and was fouled.

Still, Wade was much more active on defense than James — ball-hawking, rotating, challenging passing lanes, and never taking a play off. Advantage: Wade.

Whatever Wade concedes to James in size in the battle of the boards, he almost makes up for with hustle, hops, and sheer determination. Still, James is much more of a glass-eater. Advantage: James.

The X-factor in comparing these two guys is the quality of their teammates. Wade tries to do more simply because he has to do more — which is why he sometimes forces his penetrations and takes ill-advised shots.

James, though, is surrounded by guys like West, Mo Williams, Boobie Gibson, Wally Szczerbiak, Sasha Pavlovic, and even Ilgauskas, who can routinely knock down any open shots that his drives-and-dishes can create for them. Also, James can cruise on defense because he has the bigs who can protect his back.

In the final accounting, it's still LeBron by a landslide — which has more to do with his overall brilliance than with any major flaws in D-Wade's game.

If only LBJ was a more polished shooter and had quicker feet on defense, he'd be as good as Kobe Bryant. But since James is obviously working hard on his (relative) weaknesses, it may not be long before he will indeed become the undisputed king of NBA basketball.

About a month ago, I showed you pics of Nifty Fifty dead, lying on my hand, with its guts showing...

Searching for the next affordable but durable prime lens was the next logical thing to do...however, it will cost me around 20k. (sigma 30mm f/1.4 HSM or canon 28mm f/1.8 USM)

Then tonight I decided to bring out Nifty Fifty from its casket, with the precision screw drivers at hand, and start to look at the damage carefully...I saw some locking mechanism on the inner metal ring, which I suppose locks the lens to the body. I was figuring out on how to do it since the focusing ring is on top of it. I decided to use the precision flat head to snap it and it did the job.

Nifty Fifty is now a zombie.

Around 40Gb -- for my Music (stored in my 60Gb iPod)

And around 70 DVD-R's of Videos (approx 280Gb)

And around 10Gb of documents/tutorials

And now I'm contemplating of getting a new external storage device...

Questions/Things to consider:
-What I have now as my main computer is a laptop (which most of the time stays at home)
-Should I get a network storage device where every laptop in the house can access the contents without turning on a PC?
-Should I get a portable drive since what I have is a laptop (biggest is 320Gb only as of now)

after much ado. the eraserheads concert is most definitely pushing
through.

philip morris and its brands have pulled out from the concert. but
another company is taking over the production. the turn over started
yesterday and they have already started work on the site in the fort.
so you can check.

there are good news and bad news.

unfortunately its no longer free. all the long winded registration
procedures in the red nation site is now void.

the good news is that the age limit is now 12 years old (for safety
reasons)and tickets will be sold so you dont have to wait for
confirmation and what not.

the official announcement and ticketing details will come out in major
newspapers and on the radio on tuesday.

these are the only details i know for now so no need to email me. im
just the drummer.

btw. i just got home from the last rehearsal. the band is cooking. we

Eraserheads to reunite for one night only in Aug

After weeks of speculation, it was finally confirmed that the legendary OPM rock band the Eraserheads will reunite for a one-night concert to be held at the CCP Open Grounds on August 30, 2008.

The band, composed of Ely Buendia, Buddy Zabala, Marcus Adoro, and Raimund Marasigan, were highly responsible for the resurgence of Pinoy rock music in the '90s. Armed with catchy hooks, street-smart lyrics, and uncanny pop sensibilities, the Eraserheads rose to critical and commercial prominence and was dubbed as the country's own version of The Beatles—a tag the quartet simultaneously scoffed and cherished during their phenomenal reign.

Strained relationship among the band members unfortunately led the group to disband following frontman Ely Buendia's departure in 2002. Ely's resignation was relayed through his bandmates only through a text message citing the words, "It's graduation time."

LONG AND WINDING ROAD. Years after the band called it quits, the Eraserheads legacy grew exponentially with various tributes and accolades being accorded to the group through various art and pop culture media. At the same time, fans clamor for the band members to reunite grew steadily particularly after Ely survived a heart attack early last year.

Still, and despite all the noise created by old and new fans, the reality of a reunion was still remote. Even Buendia's near brush with mortality seem to do nothing to soften the singer-songwriter's firm resolve.

Some clues, however, seem to suggest that a reunion may finally happen earlier than expected. Last year, July 26, a special event dubbed as Eraser X was held at Saguijo Café in Makati featuring Raimund Marasigan and Buddy Zabala complemented by fellow musician friends playing an all Eraserheads set list.

A few months earlier, Raimund and Buddy together with former guitarist Marcus Adoro graced the book launching of Tikman ang Langit: An Anthology on the Eraserheads at Powerbooks in Greenbelt, Makati City. Ely opted to skip both events citing prior commitments as the culprit for his absences. Many, of course, believed that the enigmatic frontman was simply making an excuse so as not to offend the fans who were anxiously hoping for a reunion through any means possible.

Interestingly, Marcus, backed up by a band he wittingly named Markus Highway came out with an album under Warner Music Philippines. In an interview with PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) months before the launching of his new record, Marcus shared his desire to play or at least tour with his former bandmates' new bands. He also said that his relationship with the three ex-members was okay and amicable.

But still, the big difference remains to be Ely Buendia. As evasive as he is when it comes to answering nagging questions about his glorious past as the main creative force of the "most influential" OPM band of all time, many observers took note that Buendia's current band, Pupil, was incorporating Eraserheads songs quite more frequently this year as compared to last year. There was even this rumor saying that Ely conducted a "secret gig" somewhere where he did a straight-out all Eraserheads number. The rumor was neither conformed nor denied by Ely's camp.

FORMING THE PUZZLE. For some time, cyberspace was inundated with news of an Eraserheads reunion. Recently, a blog site gradually showed sketchy little clues until it finally led to an inverted capital "E" image with the script "83008" written under the image. The figures, as it turned out, means August 30, 2008—the official date of the Eraserheads reunion concert after six years of not playing music together.

According to the reports, the four were swayed to once again play together after a "big company" tendered a huge offer. "Each member is said to be receiving a rather large sum—with estimates ranging from P2.5 million to P10 million apiece—in order to pull together for a 45 minute set," wrote music insider Jim Ayson at PhilMusic.com.

During the launching of Pedicab's second record at the Cubao Expo on July 11, words were flying that the company sponsoring the historic event is a "telecommunications" company. However, it was later revealed that a tobacco company—"quite possibly Marlboro," wrote Jim—was the brain behind the concert.

NOT REUNITING FOR GOOD. In a telephone interview with someone from Ely's camp, a source did mention that huge money was indeed involved though she downplayed the amount given by some of PEP's initial sources.

According to our source, the band, Ely in particular, relented because of the undying clamor pressed by the fans and not largely because of the money.

"Maybe it's a good way to finally close the chapter," our source, who requested anonymity, shared.

"The call for a reunion concert has been going on for a long time ever since they [Eraserheads] disbanded. Somehow this is bound to happen; it's just a matter kung kailan and who's going to sponsor. This is for all the fans and to celebrate na din the E-heads legacy. It'll be exciting and we're hoping that everybody would have a great time during the concert. Mas maganda nga sana kung nandoon lahat ng involved sa history ng band like the former managers."

Our source though stressed that the band won't re-form and that the concert is strictly a one day affair. Asked about the band members current relationship, she said that it is still the same although, "We'll see as this thing go along. I'm not really sure about Ely's feelings at this point. But his relationship with the two [Buddy and Marcus] was okay naman even before the reunion talks."

Again, we excitedly asked the possibility of the band reuniting for good. Perhaps the concert may finally lead the members to iron out their differences for good after seeing the amount of love and adulation they still enjoy from fans and fellow artists.

Pausing a little, our source heaved a sigh before saying, "I don't know. Honestly, I don't think that hugs and kisses would be exchanged during and after the concert. But still, who knows... at this point everything is still pretty much up in the air." - Philippine Entertainment Portal

Fan Campaigns

After some statements made by NBC's Entertainment head Ben Silverman about the future of the show and the fact that everything seemed to point that Friday Night Lights wouldn't be back after the Writer's Strike, the fans put together two fan campaigns, one suggested to send lightbulbs to the NBC's offices powered by Best Week Ever and the other at Save FNL Campaign ^[75] raised money to send Footballs and charity foundations that were related somehow to the show.

As of today the Save FNL Campaign has raised $15840 for 18750 footballs; $2061 for charity, and $924 worth of DVDs for troops stationed overseas. The first shipment of 50 boxes of footballs was sent to Ben Silverman at NBC on February 28th and the second was sent to Jeff Zucker on March 3rd.

Lucas rubbed shoulders with the elite in entertainment, politics, and crime, even meeting Howard Hughes at one of Harlem's best clubs in his day. Though he owned several mink and chinchilla coats and other accessories, Frank Lucas much preferred to dress very casually and corporately as to not attract attention to himself. He fathered 1 child.[citation needed]
When he was arrested in the mid-70's, all of Lucas' assets were seized by the government.

Penny Hardaway waived by Heat, making room for Luke Jackson

MIAMI (AP) -- Penny Hardaway's comeback attempt with the Miami Heat has ended.

The 36-year-old forward was waived Wednesday, a move that cleared the roster spot Miami needed to sign another former first-round draft pick -- guard Luke Jackson. But the Heat haven't ruled out bringing Hardaway back in some capacity.

"It was a business decision more than anything else," Heat coach Pat Riley said. "We tried to do something last week. We couldn't. But you never know. He may be back. We'll just see what happens over the next month."

Hardaway signed a non-guaranteed contract with Miami this summer after recovering from an array of injuries that kept him off the court for nearly three full seasons. He started eight times this season, but averaged only 3.8 points on 37 percent shooting, and didn't play in any of Miami's past four games.

"It was a tough, tough move," said Riley, whose team is off to a 6-15 start.

Agent Jeff Wechsler said Hardaway was "very, very appreciative of the chance he got" from Riley and Miami owner Micky Arison, and that he intends to keep playing -- somewhere.

"He worked hard all summer, he worked hard through training camp and played well for them," Wechsler said. "He's getting everything back to where he needs to be."

Hardaway has a 15.2 point-per-game average in 704 career regular-season games. He was told of Miami's decision Wednesday morning before practice. He could be claimed off waivers by another team within a 48-hour window, although it's unclear if any other clubs will have interest.

Heat guard Dwyane Wade said he hopes to see Hardaway playing somewhere.

"I don't think he worked this hard for it to be the end," Wade said. "I think he's going to continue to try to play somewhere else. I think Penny will be best on a team that's really winning and have that veteran team where he can come in and help them. It's kind of tough on a team that's struggling like us. We need a lot of things right now."

Hardaway showed flashes of production with Miami: His 6-for-6, 16-point night in New Jersey on Nov. 17 keyed a 91-87 Heat victory.

In the four weeks that have followed, he managed a total of 19 points.

The once-electric guard was a fast-rising star when he entered the NBA for the 1993-94 season. One year later, he and Shaquille O'Neal brought an Eastern Conference championship to Orlando.

But knee problems kept Hardaway to 59 games in 1996-97, then surgery limited him to 19 games the following year. In the years that followed, he's battled plantar fasciitis, more knee surgery, thumb surgery and even more knee surgery.

He worked through all that and earned a shot with Miami. But when the Heat decided it wanted Jackson -- who essentially plays the same position -- it deemed Hardaway expendable.

"If we were 15-6, I wouldn't have made the move," Riley said. "I brought Penny in here knowing that he was going to give us experience, intelligence, basketball IQ, all of those things and some skill to facilitate Dwyane and Shaquille. This is not his fault. It's nothing he didn't do."

So now, Miami will see what kind of offensive boost the 26-year-old Jackson can provide.

Jackson was the 10th overall pick by Cleveland in the 2004 draft, then played only 10 games that year for the Cavaliers. The former Oregon star also has played with the Los Angeles Clippers and Toronto Raptors, plus done stints in the NBDL.

Jackson signed with the Idaho Stampede last week, scored 30 points in his first game with that club, then left the team for his workout with the Heat.

"It's been a tough journey to get here but I feel like I'm better for that," Jackson said. "So hopefully this is my time and there's a spot for me here to contribute."

At kung mas mamalasin, uulan pa ng malakas kaya napipilitang magsiksikan ang lahat ng tao sa munting kapilya ng unibersidad.

Nandito ako ngayon sa inyong harapan upang magsalaysay tungkol sa simbahang kasalukuyang tinatayo diyan sa tapat ng Bel Field, ang Simbahan ng Gesu.

Noong dekada kwarenta, nasa Padre Faura pa ang Ateneo. Nasama ang paaralan sa mga nabombang establisyamento sa buong kamaynilaan noong panahon ng Hapon. Kaya naman inilipat ang Ateneo dito sa Loyola Heights. Sa paglipat ng paaralan sa lugar na ito, nagkaroon na ng planong magpatayo ng isang gymnasium at simbahan sa loob ng Ateneo. Ngunit sa di malamang dahilan, hindi natuloy ang pagpapatayo ng simbahan. Sa katunayan, nauna pang gawin ang Loyola Gym. Mahigit limang dekada na ang nakalilipas, wala pa ring simbahan ang Ateneo.

Dahil sa napakong pangarap na magkaroon ng simbahan ang Ateneo, napagdesisyunan ng administrasyon na magpagawa na ng simbahan. At hindi lamang ito isang simpleng simbahan, kundi isang simbahang umaabot sa P50 milyon ang halaga. Isa lamang ang katanungan ng marami ukol dito: Makatwiran ba ang pagpapatayo ng Simbahan ng Gesu o hindi?

Sa pagpapatayo ng isang simbahan, kailangan ang magpaplano nito. Kaya naman minabuti ni Fr. Bienvenido Nebres, S.J., ang direktor ng Ateneo, na bumuo ng Board of Trustees o komite upang sila na ang mangasiwa sa pagpaplano ng simbahan. Ito ay pinangungunahan ng mga Heswitang arkitekto. Ang grupong ito ang nagsasa-ayos ng lahat ng mga hakbangin upang mapatayo ang simbahan: mula sa pagbibisita sa mga architectural firms, hanggang sa pag-ka-canvas ng mga materyales na gagamitin. Samakatuwid, sila ang nangangasiwa sa lahat ng mga magiging desisyon sa pagpapatayo ng Simbahan ng Gesu.

Bakit nga pala napili ng komite ang pangalang Gesu? Ang gesu ay ang Italyanong salita ng Hesus. Sa Roma, mayroon ding “Church of Gesu,” ang kaisa-isang simbahan ng mga Heswita. Dito sila nananampalataya. Kaya naman napili ang “gesu” bilang pangalan ng simbahang ipinapatayo sapagkat ito ay sumisimbolo sa presensya ni Hesus. Angkop na angkop din ang Simbahan ng Gesu bilang opisyal na simbahan ng Ateneo sapagkat ito’y tumutukoy sa kapisanan ng Society of Jesus..

Ang komite ay nagkaroon ng unang plano para sa pagpapatayo ng simbahan. Masasabing sobrang ganda ng disenyo ng simbahan, at baka sobra-sobra pa nga ang kapasidad nito kumpara sa mga Atenistang nagsisimba. Ang triangulong hugis nito ay naglalayong magkaroon ng epekto sa mga takapakinig ng misa upang sabay-sabay nilang marinig ang mga sinasabi ng nasa harapan. Maaaring sabihing napaka-mitikuloso naman nito ngunit isa talaga ito sa mga pakay ng disenyo ng Simbahan ng Gesu. Napagkaalaman ng komite, matapos tingnan ang halaga ng mga gagamiting materyales, na aabot sa halagang P80 milyon. Ito ay para mapanatili lamang ang orihinal na plano. At kung isina-alang-alang pa ang posibleng pagtaas ng presyo ng mga materyales, posibleng umabot pa ang gastos sa P120 milyon. Pero dahil sa maraming tumutol sa lubhang malaking halaga nito, napagdesisyunan ng kumite na baguhin ang plano, magbago ng kaunting detalye upang bumaba sa P50 milyon ang gagastusin.

Milyon ang pinag-uusapan sa pagpapatayo ng Simbahan ng Gesu. Kaya naman dapat talagang mapaliwanagan ang mga tao lalo na ang mga Atenista ukol sa malaking halagang gugugulin para sa simbahan. Ayon kay Fr. Nebres, ang mga gusali sa paaralang ito ay sumisimbolo sa mga mithiin nating mga Atenista. Isa lamang ang ibig sabihin nito, na ang mga magagandang pamantayan ng paaralan ay nagpapatunay sa magagandang layunin ng mga Atenista. Ang mga gusaling ito ay tumutulong sa mga Atenista upang makamit nila ang kanilang mga minimithi. Isang magandang anolohiya rito ay ang pagpapaganda ng mga sports facilities ng Ateneo. Pinaganda ang sahig ng Loyola Gym, at higit pa rito, nagpatayo pa ng isang modernong pasilidad pampalakasan, ang Moro Lorenzo Sports Complex. Itong mga pagbabagong ito ay may adhikaing makatulong sa mithiin ng Ateneo na umunlad sa larangan ng palakasan sa UAAP. Ganito rin ang nais niya sa Simbahan ng Gesu, na magdulot ito ng magagandang epekto sa buhay ispirituwal ng mga Atenista.

Ayon na din kay Fr. Nebres, sa pagpapatayo ng Simbahan ng Gesu, hindi gagalawin ang internal funds ng Ateneo, o sa madaling salita, hindi gagamitin ang binabayad nating tuition fee sa pagpapatayo ng mamahaling simbahang ito. Bagkus ang panggagastos sa simbahan ay manggagaling lamang sa mga donasyon ng iba’t ibang indibidwal o mga alumni. Posible nga bang makalikom ang Ateneo ng P50 milyon mula sa mga donasyon? Posible, dahil may mga alumni na walang humpay pa ring sumusuporta sa Ateneo, na milyon-milyon kung mag-donasyon. Isang magandahang halibawa nito ay ang donasyon nina Rey Gamboa at Jun Bernardino sa NBA All-Star court na may halagang $100,000. Kaya naman pala hindi na dapat mabahala ang kahit na sino sapagkat “libre” naman ang pagpapagawa ng simbahan.

Oo nga’t libre, pero napakalaking halaga pa rin ang P50 milyon para sa isang simbahan. Ito ang katwiran ng mga hindi sang-ayon sa pagpapatayo ng isang magarang simbahan tulad ng Simbahan ng Gesu. Para kay Fr. John Caroll, isang Heswita, ang P50 milyong donasyon ay mas mabuting mapunta sa mga nangangailangan. Ayon sa kanya, marami ang maibibigay na tulong ng P50 milyon, kahit na kaunting bahagi ng P50 milyong ito ay isang malikang bagay na. Ang pera ay mas wastong maibahagi sa mga biktima ng kalamidad, sa mga mahihirap, o kahit na sino pa mang nangangailangan, o kaya naman sa scholarship fund ng Ateneo, para naman maraming karapat-dapat na estudyante ang makapag-aral dito, at hindi lamang sa mga nabibiyayaan mayayamang pamilya. Ito ang nararapat at ito ang dapat para kay Fr. Caroll.

Ngunit wala pa naman talagang simbahan ang Ateneo upang mapagdausan ng mahahalagang pagdiriwang, isa na dito ang kumpil o kaya nama’y first communion ng mga elementarya. Tama, pero hindi rin naman sinabi ni Fr. Caroll na tutol siya sa pagpapatayo ng isang maayos at kapakipakinabang na simbahan. Para sa kanya, importante rin ang magkaroon ng simbahan ang Ateneo, subalit ang halagang P50 milyon ay sobra-sobra para sa isang simbahan. Maaari namang magpatayo ng isang simbahan na kasing laki rin ng Simbahan ng Gesu, ngunit mas simple at mas mura. Hindi naman pagtitipid sa simbahan ang pakay ng ganitong pangangatwiran, ngunit pagtanggap lamang sa realidad na mas magagamit pa ang pera sa mas makabuluhang paraan upang makatulong sa kapwa.

Kung tutuusin, hindi lamang pera ang isyu dito, kundi ang totoong layunin ng pagpapagawa ng Simbahan ng Gesu. Kailangan ba talaga ang simbahan ng Gesu o isa lamang itong paraan upang may maipagyabang na naman ang Ateneo na “tourist spot?”

Nakapasok na ako sa Most Blessed Sacrament Chapel sa La Salle. Isa itong kapilya, ngunit higit na mas malaki at mas maganda kumpara sa kapilya ng Ateneo. Ang mga bintana ay stained glass at ang sahig naman ay gawa sa marmol. Maganda ngunit hindi kasing gara ng Simbahan ng Gesu. Hindi lamang ang La Salle ang may maipagyayabang na simbahan, pati na ang UST, na kung saan pati ang main building ng unibersidad ay nagmumukha na ring simbahan. Kung ang tanging layunin ng Ateneo ay matapatan o mahigitan ang mga nag-gagandahang simbahan ng ibang paaralan, masisira ang tunay na kahulugan ng Simbahan ng Gesu. Magiging isang kasangkapan na lamang ito upang tumaas uli ang mga paningin ng mga Atenista sa kanilang sarili, o kaya nama’y maging isang gusali na lamang, na walang saysay para sa ispirituwal na buhay ng mga Atenista.

Kailangan nga ba ang Simbahan ng Gesu? Kailangan ang simbahan, ngunit hindi ang Simbahan ng Gesu. Ang pagkakaroon ng isang magandang simbahan ay hindi gumagarantiya sa mas mataas na bilang ng mga nagsisimba. Hindi rin nangangahulugang lalong mag-iibayo ang presensya ni Hesus sa mga buhay ng Atenista matapos magawa ang simbahan ng Gesu. Ang kailangan ng mga estudyante ay isang simbahan na ginawa para kay Hesus, na may pagpapahalaga sa kapakanan ng ibang tao. Kailangang maprotektahan ng simbahang itinatayo ang integredad ng mga Atenista, at hindi mas lalong palabuin ito. Dapat magsilbing inspirasyon ang simbahan sa mga Atenista na magpakumbaba at matutong mamuhay ng simple, at hindi mamuhay sa karangyaan.

Isa ako sa mga salungat sa pagpapatayo ng Simbahan ng Gesu. At marahil, isa lamang ang aking dahilan: mas makabubuting tumulong na lang ang Ateneo sa mga nararapat bigyang-tulong imbis na tulungang mapaganda ang isang maganda nang unibersidad.

Ang mga Atenista ay sinasabing “men for others.” Dapat natin laging isapuso ito. Ang dapat nating alalahanin ay ang kapakanan ng iba at hindi ang ating mga makasariling mithiin. Sana tayong lahat, pati na ang administrasyon, ay maging mga tunay na Atenista.

He earned it. The game vs San Antonio showed that he is still one of the smartest players in the NBA, and that compensates for his lost explosiveness.

He even got some positive remarks from Heat fans in the Miami Heat forums. Galing! At totoo yung observation ng isang fan, na kapag si Penny ang pumasa kay Shaq, SAKTO. Kilalang kilala na talaga ni Penny si Shaq kaya alam niya saan at kailan papasa kay Shaq :)

Sa pagbalik ni Dwayne, sana maging starter pa rin si Penny at maging playmaker para kay Dwade and Shaq.

Tradisyon na Lamang Ba?

Hindi maikakailang hindi nakalilimot ang mga Pilipino sa tradisyon.

Ngayong ika-2 ng Nobyembre ginugunita natin ang Araw ng mga Patay. Ngunit tradisyon na nga lamang bang maituturing ito? Hindi na nga ba nabibigyang-buhay ang tunay kahulugan ng “pistang” ito?

Isa itong kaganapang ipinagdiriwang ng mga Romano Katoliko sa buong mundo. Sa panahong ito ginugunita ang mga kamag-anak, kaibigan, at kakilalang sumakabilang-buhay. Ipinagdarasal ang kaluluwa ng mga namatay na pinaniniwalaang nasa purgatoryo.

Noong ika-11 siglo nagsimula ang okasyong ito, sa tulong ni Odilo, abbot ng Cluny. Sinadyang itapat ito sa araw matapos ang pagdiriwang sa Araw ng mga Santo, kung saan binibigyang-pugay ang mga santo ng Simbahang Katoliko, upang mailipat ang pansin mula sa mga kaluluwa sa langit patungo sa mga kaluluwa sa purgatoryo.

Ito nga ba ang nangyayari ngayon? Naipatutupad ba ang hangarin ng araw na ito? Nabibigyan nga ba ng pansin ang mga kaluluwang nasa kabilang buhay?

Sa Pilipinas, tuwing ika-1 ng Nobyembre nagsisimulang magdagsaan ang mga tao sa mga sementeryo. Mayroong doon na magpapalipas ng gabi at hihintayin ang pagdating ng mismong Araw ng mga Patay. Mayroon ding bumabalik na lamang kinabukasan upang magtirik ng kandila at mag-alay ng bulaklak.

Karaniwan nang makikita sa mga puntod ang nakasinding kandila at nakapatong na mga bulaklak. Karaniwan na ring makikita ang malalaking pamilyang nagsama-sama at nagkakatuwaan. Maraming pagkain. Maraming batang nagtatakbuhan. Maraming nagsusugal. Maraming mga dalaga at binata na naka-porma na parang pupunta sila sa isang handaan.

Bihira ka na makakita ng pamilyang nagdarasal sa tabi ng puntod. Bihira ka nang makakita ng pamilyang dumadalo at nag-aalay ng misa para sa kanilang mga yumaong minamahal. Bihira ka nang makakita ng taong alam kung ano ang layunin ng Araw ng mga Patay.

Marami sa pamilyang Pilipino ang pumupunta na lamang sa mga sementeryo dahil nakasanayan na ito. Tuwing darating ang una o ikalawang araw ng Nobyembre, magsasama-sama ang buong pamilya. Pupunta sa libingan ng kanilang kamag-anak at doon magkukuwentuhan.

Marami sa pamilyang Pilipino ang nag-aakalang sapat na ang pagtitirik ng kandila at pag-aaalay ng mga bulaklak para sa kanilang mga patay.

Marami sa mga Pilipino ang hindi na pinahahalagahan ang Araw na ito; sa halip pu-porma na lamang at rarampa sa daan at magbabakasakaling
mayroong bagong makikilala.

Madalas ginagamit itong pagkakataon upang magpakitang-gilas. Magdadala ng higit na masasarap na pagkain, magsusuot ng magagarang damit, magdadala ng mga high-tech na kagamitan. Ginagamit itong tila isang lunsaran ng pagyayabang.

Hindi maikakailang maging sa araw na ito makikita ang hindi pagkakapantay-pantay ng lipunan. Mayroong mga sementeryong tanging ang mayayaman lamang ang may-kayang bumili ng lupa. Mayroong mga libingang tanging ang mayayaman lamang ang may-kayang magpagawa.

Nakalulungkot isiping sinasalamin ng isang pagdiriwang ng Simbahang Katoliko ang mahirap-mayamang pagkakahati ng lipunan. Nakalulungkot isiping nagagamit ito upang mapalawak pa ang agwat ng mahirap at mayaman.

Higit na nakalulungkot isiping katulad ng ibang pagdiriwang ng Simbahang Katoliko, katulad ng Pasko, hindi na rin ito nabibigyang-diwa. Hindi na naisasabuhay at naipatutupad ang mga tunay na layunin. Ginagawa at itinuturing na lamang itong isang tradisyon.

Walang masama sa mga tradisyon, ngunit kung ang pagiging “tradisyon” na lamang ang iisipin, para saan pa ang ginagawang pagdiriwang? Wala ring saysay kung puro pagpapakita na lamang ang ating gagawin. Kung walang pagsasa-puso at kung walang pagsasa-kaluluwa, ang matitira na lamang puro buto…puro kalansay.

Penny makes Heat's opening roster

MIAMI (AP) -- Penny Hardaway is officially back in the NBA, after the Miami Heat placed him on their season-opening roster Monday.

The Heat released guards Jeremy Richardson and Brian Chase, along with forwards Marcus Slaughter and Devin Green to reach the league-mandated 15-man limit.

Hardaway was signed to a non-guaranteed contract this summer after a strong tryout. He hasn't played in a regular-season game in nearly two years because of knee problems, and has been limited for several seasons by an array of injuries.

The Heat will enter the season with five centers. Shaquille O'Neal, Alonzo Mourning and Mark Blount were locks, and coach Pat Riley also decided to keep Earl Barron for a third season and undrafted rookie Joel Anthony.

The guards on the roster are Dwyane Wade, Jason Williams, Smush Parker, Ricky Davis, rookie Daequan Cook and Chris Quinn. Forwards making the team are Hardaway, Udonis Haslem, Dorell Wright and Alexander Johnson, and Blount will likely be used some at power forward as well.

Miami opens its season Thursday night against the Detroit Pistons.
